A lot of thought has gone into deciphering animal behavior. One of the most common myths is that cats and dogs cannot live together without fighting. This is not true. puppies and kittens have been known to live peacefully together, and indeed to become friends.  Raising kittens and puppies to get along  just requires a little more diligence.

But why, you may ask, do these animals’ personalities appear to clash? Firstly, their genetic makeup is different. This causes dogs to behave as predators to cats. Also, they have the “survival of the fittest” instinct, which makes them want to triumph over their perceived competition. In the wild, animals must defend their territories in order to ensure enough food to meet their needs. The environment of the home has a major role in the behavior of cats and dogs. When an animal lives among its own species, and then encounters another species, it will feel the need to protect its territory. For example, a home that has had only cats in it, but introduces a dog into the mix will create friction because the cats will see the dog as an interloper and a threat.

So, how is it possible for cats and dogs to get along? The animals have to be conditioned to the presence of one another. Acquiring a cat and a dog while both are young will allow them to grow up accustomed to each other without the negative perception that attaches to a new animal introduced into an existing group. It is sometimes possible to introduce a young animal into an existing group because the young animal will not try to dominate the other animals, but this does not always work. A nursing mother will often accept a baby of another species, if she feels that it will not endanger he own young to do so.

You can use positive reinforcement to encourage the animals to get along together. This means rewarding good behavior, with treats and praise, as opposed to punishing bad behavior. They come to associate the rewards with the behavior required to get them. This can also be used to encourage appropriate behavior in general. You must be sure to give the rewards immediately to ensure that the animal can connect it to the behavior that won it. Their memories are short, so you must be prompt.

You should also remember to provide separate feeding stations, to avoid competition and fighting. Cats can be fed at a higher location to prevent the dog from reaching their food. As long as you feed them in different places, you can feed them at the same time.

In conclusion, it is possible for cats and dogs to live together without fighting. Animals will take their cues from their owner in how they treat one another, and you must be aware of the signals you give out. Expecting and rewarding appropriate behavior is the surest way to achieve it. Remember that you play a part in their relationships.

Raising your child along with your pets can pose problems. It may be easier for you to wait until your kids are old enough to understand everything there is to properly handle your puppy or kitten. If someone in your family already has a puppy or a kitten, you should take this as an opportunity for you to teach proper pet care. Make sure your child leaves the pet alone when it is napping, exaggerating in hushing and tiptoeing around the sleeping pet. You should praise your child whenever he or she shows appropriate behavior around the pet. If there are some cases when the cat hisses or the dog growls, you should explain why it happened. Use every incident as an opportunity to teach your child how to handle pets.

To keep both your child and your pet safe, you need to keep them supervised. If you can’t watch them or if you are busy, you might as well separate them. 8 Different Foods Your Pet Puppies and Kittens Should Avoid!

Domestic pets like cats and dogs can usually consume some of the foods that we eat. However, there are several kinds of food that your pet should not eat. If they do consume these kinds of food, they may develop some problems. Here are some of the foods that you should avoid giving to your pets and their effects.

Milk – Kittens and puppies love the taste of milk, but after they have been through the weaning process sometimes they become lactose intolerant. If your pet is intolerant to lactose and consumes too much milk, it will give them diarrhea and an upset stomach. Milk may be a good source of calcium, but too much milk may cause bone development problems in puppies and kittens. Food specially formulated for your pets contain the right amount of calcium, so you should use those instead.

Tuna – It is quite well known that cats like the taste of fish, so giving tuna as a treat occasionally will not cause any harm to your cat. However, if your pet consumes canned tuna in oil almost every day with no other food, it may develop Pansteatitis, a skin disease that is also known as yellow fat disease. When your cat has this, it may be very sensitive to touch and would have a hard time getting around.

Liver – Fresh liver is a good appetizer for your pets. This is really rich in nutrients, but giving it as a sole food to your cat or dog could lead to serious problems. When your cat has too much Vitamin A, it may cause deformities on its bones, leaving your cat unable to walk. There is no way to reverse the changes, so you should be careful in feeding too much liver to your cat.

Onions – Many dogs enjoy the taste of onions, but they could be toxic if they are consumed in large quantities. As a matter of fact, even a Labrador-sized dog can develop anemia if it eats a whole onion. It may even cause death to some dogs.

Chocolate – While cats don’t really like sweet food, dogs seem to love eating sweets such as chocolate. However, chocolate contains Theobromine, which is poisonous to dogs. The amount of this substance varies with each type of chocolate, with cocoa powder having the highest concentration and milk chocolate the least. If you want to give your dog chocolate treats safely, there are dog treats specially manufactured without Theobromine.

Grapes and Raisins – These foods are poisonous to dogs, and they should never be fed. Within just a few hours, a dog that has eaten grapes will start to vomit, and this will develop into kidney failure and even death.

Animal Bones – Dogs like something to chew on, but you should avoid feeding them animal bones.The bones could splinter and injure the mouths of your dog. In extreme cases, broken teeth resulting from chewing bones may cause an obstruction at your dog’s stomach, which will need to be surgically removed. Cooked bones often cause the most problems to dogs, so you should be careful in feeding them bones.

Although your pets may seem to enjoy some or all of the foods listed above, you should be careful in giving these to them. If they eat too much of these, they may start to develop problems which could ultimately cause their deaths.
